About FIRST Programs

FIRST, which stands for โ€œFor Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,โ€ is an international non-profit offering youth STEM programs for kids from 4 to 18 years old. Their mission is to inspire youth to find a passion in STEM, which they accomplish through afterschool programs, with their core values of discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork, and fun. FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, and the organization has emphasized the importance of self-confidence, communications, and leadership.

FIRST LEGO League (ages 4-16): FLL focuses on younger kids and introducing STEM through the simplicity of LEGOS. Students are able to engage in real world problem solving and STEM experiences through the guided robotics program. There are three divisions with different age ranges that inspires youth to strengthen critical thinking, coding, and design skills with hands-on learning. FIRST LEGO League Discover is for children, ages 4-6, that stimulates natural curiosity and learning with LEGOยฎ Duplo bricks. FIRST LEGO League Explore has teams, ages 6-10, introduces the fundamentals of engineering, design, and code with real world problems and LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education robot. FIRST LEGO League Challenge is a friendly competition for older kids, ages 9-16, to practice researching, problem-solving, coding, programming, and engineering to solve a real world problem.

FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 7-12): FTC has teams with a maximum of 15 members are tasked with the challenge to design, build, program, and operate robots. They will compete in a head-to-head competition against other teams in an alliance format. Adult coaches and mentors emphasize the value of hard-work and teamwork, along with developing critical STEM skills and engineering principals. (MOE is an FTC team!)

FIRST Robotics Competition (Grades 9-12): FRC students compete in larger teams with industrial sized robots. Guided by professional mentors, students must raise funds, create a team brand, and use teamwork skills to build large scale robots. By adapting to strict constraints, using limited resources, and navigating unexpected challenges, FRC provides as close to a real-world engineering experience as possible.
